5 Tried and True Relationship Maintenance Tips

Happy couples do these five things

A huge meta-analysis of 35 studies and 12,273 reports reveals five tried and true tips for maintaining and improving the quality of intimate relationships. The University of Illinois study highlights the importance of putting in this effort: “Relationships are like cars in that you have do certain things to keep them running,” says Brian Ogolsky, professor of human and community development.

5 Best Relationship Maintenance Tips

  1. openness – talking about your and your partner’s feelings
  2. positivity – being a “fun” person and interacting with each other in a cheerful way
  3. assurances – making sure your partner knows you’re in the relationship for the long haul
  4. shared tasks – dividing household responsibilities equally
  5. a shared social network – make an effort to include your partner’s friends and family

If you’re practicing one of these strategies, you’re more likely to practice the others as well. But perhaps surprisingly, the study suggests that what you are doing doesn’t matter as much as if your actions are noticed by your partner. The tendency of couples to get busy, become enmeshed in routines, and take each other for granted is all the more reason to consciously adopt these relationship strategies.

“Even a small attempt at maintenance, such as asking how your partner’s day was, sending a humorous text to make him laugh, or picking up the phone and calling your mother- or father-in-law, can have a positive impact on your relationship and make you happier,” Ogolsky adds.
