Colored Dishes Amp Up Food and Drink Flavors

Just another study showing the impact of color on flavor!

Serving guests hot chocolate this winter? We have a fun and whimsical way to make them happier and make the hot chocolate actually taste better: researchers have proven that hot chocolate tastes better in an orange or cream colored cup than in a white or red one.

Obviously, the bigger takeaway is along the lines of “The color of the container where food and drink are served can enhance some attributes like taste and aroma,” says Betina Piqueras-Fiszman, researcher. Her study showed that the flavor of chocolate served in orange or cream coloured cups was better, but the sweetness and the aroma were hardly influenced by the color of the cup.

But other studies have shown that you eat less off of a blue plate, that yellow packaging improves the flavor of lemon, that soft drinks in cold colors like blue seem more thirst-quenching than those in warm colours like red, that pink drinks are perceived as more sugary, that strawberry mousse appears sweeter on a white plate than a black one, and that coffees in brown packaging are associated with stronger flavors and aromas than coffees packaged in blues and yellows.

There are countless other examples of color influencing everything from mood to overall health and well-being. Why not try amping up your food or drink’s flavor with a new color of serving dish? It’s a fun new change that just might bring you an extra kick of happiness—or maybe that’s just the hot chocolate talking!
