Let Go of FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out)

How to get happier by missing out

There’s a psychological epidemic happening right now: Fear Of Missing Out. We over-fill our proverbial plates just to make sure we don’t miss out anything, large or small. We have started to think that the more we DO, the more we’ll succeed. But people who succeed miss out all the time—and are okay with it. They’ve made their choices. Focusing on the task or event at hand while you’re doing it is critical to success and enjoyment. Don’t let FOMO ruin your good time!

Here are four ways to Let Go of FOMO:

  1. dE-compress: social media massively fuels FOMO, so set aside certain times of the day when you steer clear of twitter/facebook/pinterest—we suggest breakfast, bedtime, and post-work afternoons.
  2. Too much choice creates FOMO: it’s good to know your options, to an extent. But spend less time researching alternatives and you’ll be happier with your choice.
  3. Discerning decisions: don’t give in to pressure to decide right away; take time to decide where to invest your precious time and attention.
  4. Accept: You simply cannot be in more than one place at one time.
